Cub Scout Camp

Phoenix got to go to cub scout camp this summer.  He loved every minute.  The camp got permission to use Star Wars Rebel insignia for their t-shirts, only adding to the awesomeness of the camp.
They did crafts.

Swimming in Lake Austin.
Kayaking
What would camp be like without Giant Chess?
A little fishing (but not much catching).
A giant homemade slip and slide.
Someone thought it was a good idea to let them shoot arrows.
Phoenix showed awesome marksmanship on the BB guns. He not only earned his belt loop for shooting but got a good enough score to earn his shooting pin.
This was his camp troop.  Some kids were from church and some we just met.

Phoenix's Birthday Party

OK, so Phoenix turned 8 forever ago but he had a pretty cool party with his friends.  We went up to one of the city pools and brought cake and pizza and just swam and swam.

Adam Turned 4! Months Ago

So yes, Adam turned 4 months ago.
We had a big party for him.  A really big party.  In fact, we invited lots of people to come play at the splash park with us (a splash park can hold LOTS of people).  There was a forecast for rain but I bravely trusted in Texas weather which is nearly impossible to predict.
The night before it storms all night long, dropping buckets and buckets or rain everywhere.  By morning, everything was soaked and foggy.  So I cancel the splash park and invite everyone over to our house.  We gamely came up with some activities for the millions of kids planning on coming over and...  of course, by party time it was sunny and hot again.
Here's the kids all together.  I just thought they were cute.

Heidi's Pompeii Quest Project

This year for her Independent Study project, Heidi learned about Pompeii.  It was a great project for her as she was interested in the Roman gods and had lots of good books on the subject.
For her presentation, I got to crack open the sewing machine and make her a roman toga, which she loved.

Here she is making her presentation to her class.  Every year has gotten better and better.  Her first year was notable in that she spent the entire time talking about the decorations she had placed on her trifold board, which stickers she had used and which stuffed animals were her favorite.  This year, she was very knowledgable and did a great job talking about all she had learned.
This is at the Quest Fair where all the Quest projects are on display.

Part of Heidi's project was to find a problem with her topic and then find someway to fix it.  The problem with Pompeii is that people still live on or near Mt. Vesuvius and it could erupt again.  Heidi made a commercial to convince people to move away from Mt. Vesuvius.

Adam's Seizures

Now that we are a couple months away from it, I can post a little info about what happened.

On May 8th, we had just returned from Adam's T-Ball game.  Here he is.

I was laying down on my bed and he was in my bathroom washing his hands when I heard the glass soap dispenser crash to the ground.  I flew into the bathroom to protect him from the glass.  He had fallen back and I pulled him away from the glass and then I noticed that he was shaking a little and did not respond to me.  I thought he was choking on something.  So I pick him up to give him the heimlich but nothing changes.  Then I really start freaking out and running all over the house, carrying Adam, including shouting help out the front door.  At some point I call 911.  Adam's shaking stops.  I thought he'd died from choking to death.  But I could feel his heart and see him breathing so I felt confused.  The 911 lady said that it sounded like a seizure and they were sending the ambulance.  I'm not exactly sure what happened when:  when I called 911, when the seizure stopped, when I spoke to the lady because it is all such a blur.  She told me to lay Adam on his side because he had fallen asleep.  The paramedics got there and agreed that it was probably a seizure.  They were very reassuring and checked him out and prepared to take him to the hospital.

Cortis was out with the kids buying mother's day presents and wasn't picking up his phone so I texted him and called his parents (who live nearby).  Monika got here within seconds  (she must have dropped the phone and ran the whole way.  And Cortis had seen my text and was home before we got into the ambulance.

At the hospital, Adam woke up (sleeping for 30-45 minutes is expected after a seizure) and was in good spirits and very active.  Good stuff.  The doctor told us that seizures are surprisingly common and that there was every reason to suspect that he might never have another seizure again.  No need to restrict his activity even. So we were checked out.
We walked 1/2 block to the Which Wich sandwich place to get some lunch (as it was now 2:00pm) and Adam picked out some chips and a seat (on those unfortunately high bar stool seats) and fell off with another seizure.  It was terrifying to see him fall head first off the chair but the seizure was much, much less scary.  Cortis picked him up and carried him back to the ER.
This time everyone was a bit more serious about what was going on.  Apparently, one seizure is no-biggie but two seizures is not a good sign.  He got a CAT scan and was admitted into the hospital (by the way Go Dell Children's Hospital, I always love the care my kids get at the Children's Hospital).  We were supposed to get an EEG and an MRI, but these things must be much harder to schedule than you would think because we never got one in the hospital.
After a happily seizure free night and morning, we walked our bored and active son all over the hospital and in the playroom.  He ended up with quite a collection of toys in our room, so much so that everyone who came in commented on it.  He had to be one of the healthiest kids in the hospital.

So we were sent home with an appointment with the neurologist for an EEG and an MRI.
The EEG was normal and after consulting with the neurologist, we decided against anti-seizure medication.

Then only 6 days later, he had a series of mini-seizures (perhaps called drop-attacks) where he would seize for just a moment.  Long enough to fall backwards or drop whatever he was holding.  He had 7 in 2 1/2 hours.  We called the neurologist and he said we could come back to the hospital or try some seizure medication.  We went for the seizure medication and he hasn't had a seizure since.

Two weeks later, he had his MRI.  He had to be sedated and had a bad reaction to the sedative (threw up a few times, super groggy).  The MRI results said that his brain was "unremarkable" which is reassuring and also slightly insulting.

So where does that leave us?  The MRI scan being normal is good because there is no structural reason for the seizures.  But 70% of seizures are idiopathic which means that no one knows why they happen.  So Adam will be on the medication for some time and then we'll take him off it and see if he has any more.  There is a good chance that that will be it, no more seizures.  Or he may have seizures for the rest of his life.

Phoenix is 8!

So I keep telling the kids that this whole "growing up" thing seems to be getting out of hand and they really need to slow down a bit.  But no one pays me any mind and just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Phoenix is 8 years old today!
He is such a clever, affectionate, funny boy.
He started on swim team this summer.
This was from his 2nd grade field trip.
Actions shot! from soccer.
Playing in the snow this winter.
Just a baby.
I love this boy of mine.

Spring Stuff

Here is some of the stuff we did this spring.

The kids wanted to go camping but with Cortis working all the time on the iPad app he just isn't available.  I'll do a lot of things but I didn't quite feel comfortable going camping with just the kids so we set up the tent in the backyard and camped out there.  We had s'mores over the grill just like real camping.
Of course, before we could backyard camp I had to fix the gate to the backyard.  Too freaky with it hanging open precariously.  This is what it looked like after I took it down.
Here's the new gate. Phoenix was my helper.
Here's the back side with Adam.
Heidi and I got to go to a girl scout activity and learn about bird-watching.  Surprisingly, much more interesting than it sounds.
In the springtime in Texas, the Bluebonnets bloom and it is a tradition to take your pictures in them.  Most people take really beautiful photos.  I never got around to it so one day when I saw a nice patch and told the kids to stand in front of them for a quick photo.
Here's Heidi
I think I took these with my phone so I didn't know what I got til I saw them on my computer.
Phoenix
and Adam
Well, technically there ARE bluebonnets in the frame as well as the children but I'm not sending these to the grandparents!

The YMCA had their climbing tower open one day.  Cortis, Heidi and Phoenix got hooked up and attempted to climb.  I think we took more photos with Cortis' camera but I ended up with ones of Phoenix.
Getting started.
On his way up.
Check him out.  He is all the way at the top. I was a little worried about him at this point because to get down he would have to climb over the edge and let the harness and the belayer lower him.  But he did that too.  Good job Phoenix!
That same day at the YMCA they also had a bow and arrow station open.  Here's Heidi's first shot that hit the target.
Cortis' first shot in the target.
Phoenix's first shot in the target.

Adam's Preschool Field Trip to PetSmart

We've done a home co-op preschool this year for Adam.  We trade off with some friends and have a little school 2 days a week.  This year he went with Amelia, Vaughn, Lucy and Jazzy.  The first half of the year his friend Matthew was in his school but they moved to Houston :(
We took a field trip to PetSmart.  The people were great there and showed the kids a lot of different animals, like hamsters...
and frogs...

and snakes...
and lizards...
and a chinchilla (I think)
Adam has had such a good time with his friends and always was eager to go to "school" (as he insisted on calling it, not "preschool").

My baby turns 4!

Four years ago our youngest little boy was born into our family.
We took to him right away.
He has grown and grown.
He loves Heidi and Phoenix.
He is very charming and is good at getting what he wants.  ("Pretty please...")
He says some funny things.  ("You are correct.")
This year he has been going to a co-op preschool with his friends:  Amelia, Vaughn, Lucy and Jazzy.
At the field trip to the pet store, he got to pet some animals including a snake!

We just love this little guy to pieces.
